For home owners with a conventional mortgage, you're probably unaware that there's a part of your mortgage contract with the bank that says that they can hand over your contract to anyone they so choose.
It's called “assignability”.
That means, that your bank can SELL your mortgage to another institution, and your mortgage payments will then be redirected to this other entity who holds the mortgage on your house. The same holds true for controlling real estate.
